How Did 4/20 Start?

Whether you’ve been celebrating 4/20 for years or it’s your first time lighting up on April 20th, it’s likely that you’ve heard some origin stories around how the holiday got its start. Rumors about the history of 420 range from song lyrics to police codes, but most of the cannabis community has settled on a consensus: 4/20 originated with some high schoolers in San Rafael, California.

A group of friends heard a rumor that an unattended cannabis plant was located in the woods near their school, and they had permission from the plant’s supposed owner to seek it out and harvest the plant for their own use. The friends met daily in front of the school at 4:20 to enjoy weed before heading out on their search for the mysterious plant. While they never found the plant, they did begin to use the term 420 as code for weed.

The group of friends became close with members of the Grateful Dead, and members of the band began to use the term at their shows. Quickly, the new moniker for weed caught on. The cannabis-focused magazine High Times started using 420, and the rest is history.
